Let’s start with the most evident point – one of the greatest factors in the upward swing in my Amazon earnings has recently been a corresponding upward move traffic.

As with most techniques for making money from blogging the greater eyeballs that see your affiliate offers – the better chance you have than it changing (of course this is a generalization as not a myriad of traffic converts – but more of that in the next point).

I started out to think about this about a year ago as I looked at the growing traffic on my photography site but recognized that my Amazon revenue didn’t seem to be to be keeping up with the traffic growth that We were experiencing. What We realized is the reality DPS was a blog that was largely writing about ‘tips how to use a camera’ and this, therefore, it wasn’t really drawing readers to it who were in a ‘buying mood’. In reality, a survey that I actually did find that lots of-of my readers had just lately purchased a camera and were on my site specifically because they planned to learn how to use it.

Because of this, I added to the mix of recent content on the site more articles relevant to people buying an electronic digital camera. I wrote tips for advice on buying cameras, reviews of cameras and equipment etc. This kind of culminated in a whole new section on the blog dedicated to ‘gear’.

Slowly this has drawn new readers to your blog – readers who are researching their next camera purchase – visitors who are more likely to click a website link to Amazon and who they are more likely to make a purchase.

This is where search traffic can convert with affiliate programs – for instance when you are writing content that folks in a ‘buying mood’ are looking for.



4. Relevancy Matters


This is another common sense tip that many of us (yes I failed on this one in my early on days) mess up. A lot more relevant to your audience the items are that you promote the better chance you will of converting.

Promote iPods on your blog that largely talks about spiritual techniques and you are less likely to convert (believe myself, I tried) – promote relevant books, CDs and DVDs instead.
Promote scent on your travel blog and you’re unlikely to see many sales – travel books, luggage and other travel products is more efficient.
Sometimes it is hard to find a product that matches your matter (Amazon turn up useful info on every topic) but tries different products related to your theme and track what changes best for your audience.



5. Get People in the Door and Permit Amazon Do What they’re Proficient at


One of the great things about Amazon online marketplace is the fact it is a site people are aware of, that they trust that is certainly very good at converting visitors to be buyers. They have honed their site to present people with relevant products to them (based on previous surfing and purchasing habits) and over many years have modified their site to convert well.

As an end result, I realize that once you get individuals to visit Amazon (pretty much for any reason) that a percentage of them will naturally wrap up buying something. The cool thing is that whether they buy the thing you connected to or not – you’ll earn a commission payment.

6. Social Proof Marketing – Best Seller Prospect lists & Reader Testimonials


Individuals are more willing to make a purchase if they feel that they’re not alone and if they know that others have and are buying with them. I’m sure there are some insightful mental reasons behind this but from where I sit buying seems to somehow have become a communal activity.

One of the most powerful social proof marketing strategies that I’ve mixed with promoting Amazon affiliate marketing links is creating ‘Best Seller’ type lists for readers to show them what is currently popular in conditions of buys in our community.

The very best example that I can give with this technique in action is my Popular Digital Cams and Gear page on DPS. It’s a webpage that I update every 3 months, that I web page link to prominently on the blog and that turns very well. To construct it I simply feel the reports/stats that Amazon gives internet marketers to look at what products are selling the best from within my community. I then draw it into different types of products and ‘Waahlaaa’ – we certainly have the best retailer list.

It converts well because readers know that others in their community are buying these products too – you will find a Knowledge of the Crowd attitude going on I imagine. Another quick example of this was a newly released post – 23 Photography Publication Reviews [Ranked] where I ranked the top-selling photography literature in order of sales but also linked to reviews we’d done of each of them on the blog.

Note: the key to these ‘best seller’ lists is to drive traffic to them. One way to do this is to web page link prominently to these internet pages from the inside your blog and link to them from within other posts every once in awhile on your blog so that the post doesn’t just convert for a day or two while your post is the most recent one on your blog.

Reader Testimonials – I used to do all of the reviews of digital photography books on DPS. This was mainly because We couldn’t find anyone more to do them and probably partly a little because I’m a control freak.

However eventually We had a reader offer to write a reserve review for me personally. Because We knew the reader I believed it’d be OK so published it. As with my reviews, it acquired an affiliate hyperlink to Amazon online marketplace in it. I had been a little skeptical about whether it’d convert though because I thought my viewers may not respond as well to a stranger’s review of the book as opposed to my own. I had been wrong.

The review not only converted as well as my normal reviews – but do better yet than normal! This kind of could have been for many reasons but the one that I suspect occurred was the way that My spouse and I introduced the reviewer as a ‘DPS reader’. I actually didn’t build them up to be an expert, I just presented them as a normal visitor with no agenda needing to share some thoughts on a book that had helped them.

My spouse and I suspect that the interpersonal proof concept came into play a little here. Readers saw another target audience recommending something in an authentic way and wanted to get a copy for themselves.

Note: interestingly Amazon online marketplace themselves uses reader reviews as a fairly major feature of their site.



7. Genuine Recommendations and Opinions


There are two main ways in which I promote Amazon links. The first is in ‘Reviews’ for products (the second Items cover below in the next point). These backlinks are where I or one of my copywriters will genuinely look over and test an item and give it the once-over.

I insist my writers actually read the books, test the digital cameras and use the software products that they review and cause them to become be as genuine and unbiased as possible to be able to explain both the pros and cons of the item. While there’s some temptation to hype up a product and later speak about its positives a true review will help your target audience relationship over the long haul and I find actually helps promote sales.

Review links work well because it’s usually people who are considering buying a product who really read reviews – it comes into the buying mood/intent mentioned in point #3.



8. Informational Links


The other type of link that I value to Amazon is when Now I am mentioning a product in passing and/or a new product is declared that is relevant to my niche. The camera was not yet available in stores and was not able to get an overview group yet – but it was available for Pre-Order on Amazon so we linked to it.

Generally, there was no recommendation or review attached with the website link but it was clearly a relevant link for readers who wanted to know more about it (price, specs, pictures etc). Some readers pre-ordered the cameras from that hyperlink.

Similarly, if we’re writing about Photoshop or another photography post-production software we’ll usually include a hyperlink to the software. Once again it’s not a review link but instead an informational/contextual type link. These types of don’t tend to convert as well in conditions of sales nonetheless they do get people ‘in the door’ at Amazon and can help a little with sales occasionally.

9. Contextual is very important


One of the most important reasons my initial attempts with Amazon fell flat on their face and simply didn’t convert was that I thought it’d be enough to slap a picture based button on my sidebar that highlighted a product or that was simply a flagged ad to Amazon.

Amazon online marketplace gives publishers a whole lot of these type ads but despite trying almost all of them I have had little or no success with them at all. Instead – 00% of my conversions attended from links to Amazon online from within blog content when I’m writing about the products themselves.

You should experiment with the icons and buttons Amazon offers you – if they do convert for you then more power to you personally – but every blog owner I’ve talked to that has already established success with Amazon online marketplace informs me that it is contextual links from within blogs that work best.



10. Promote Special Offers, Promotions, and Special discounts


There’s hardly a product or service on Amazon that does not have a listed discount into it. Most books are just as much as 30% off recommended full prices and at different times during the 12 months, Amazon runs other special discounts and promotions on different single products or in several product categories.

Be on the lookout for these varieties of promotions because they can be well worthwhile promoting (if relevant to your readership). In fact, last time Amazon had video cameras on special I marketed it to my e-zine readers and had visitors emailing me to give thanks to me for letting them know about it.

One more related tip is that when you are writing a review of a product and Amazon have an outlined discount – include a be aware of the discount in the post (see yesterdays post about Chris Brogan’s new publication for an example).
